The Girls creator admitted her parents always tried to talk her out of her more outlandish outfit choices when she was a child, so now that she has money of her own, she’s happy to let her sense of style run wild.
Speaking to Amy Poehler on her Good Hang podcast, she said: “I’ve always said that my style is, like, bratty five year old with a credit card.
“It’s like a girl who’s like, ‘My dad gave me this, and he said I can get whatever I want.’
“Because my parents have good taste, when I was a kid, it was a lot of, ‘You don’t want that, that’s not, you don’t want that sparkly leopard velour tunic and matching leg warmers.’ Yes, I do. And now I’m an adult who makes my own money, and I can have it.”
Lena recently turned 40 and she thinks the new decade in her life “kinda rules”, particularly because she no longer feels inclined to engage in friendship dramas via lengthy message exchanges.
She said: “I haven’t had to exchange a really heavy email in a while.
“I remember once having a fight with a girlfriend in my 20s, and we were going back and forth on these long, point-to-point [emails]…
“Now if someone raises points with me, I will not be addressing those points.
“I’m not a lawyer. I’m not going to make notes on your Docusign and send it back to you.”
The Famesick writer also admitted she turned down the opportunity to compete in the celebrity version of The Great British Bake Off because of the high standard required.
She said: “I thought, ‘Surely they can’t expect that much of us. They’re calling in actors and writers.’ “
But when she spoke to a producer, she was told the first challenge would be to create a crumpet which “expresses who you are”.
She then suggested: “I have British shorthair cats. They’re grey. I could do a crumpet that had like some grey colouring and then do ears on it and then eyes, and it could be like my cats as a crumpet.”
The producer liked the idea and suggested she made an almond butter and raspberry jam to accompany hr bake because judge Paul Hollywood is “not comfortable with any store-bought jams or butters.”
Lena concluded: “We’re out of here. I’m sorry, guys.
“I love to try to become an expert at something really quickly, but this was way beyond anything that I could handle.”
