Pop star Natalie Imbruglia has confessed she always vintage clothes because “who can afford to go shopping?”

Natalie Imbruglia always old clothes because “who can afford to go shopping?”

The Torn star, 51, has opened up about her fashion choices and admitted she rarely ever buys anything new because clothing has become so expensive – revealing she delves into her wardrobe and picks out her favourite pieces from the 1990s.

She told The Sunday Times newspaper: “I like boy shirts. I don’t go shopping. Who can afford to go shopping?

“I wear a lot of stuff which is probably 30 years old. But that’s trendy now. Remember back in the day, when you’d get criticised for wearing the same thing twice?

“Now it’s: ‘Oh, she’s rewearing.’ Times have changed. I’m a bit of a dag – that’s an Aussie expression.”

The former Neighbours actress went on to talk about her pared down style in the video for her hit 1997 single Torn with the singer admitting she wore her own clothes – combat trousers, a T-shirt and a hoodie – because she didn’t want to conform to how female pop stars were expected to look.

She explained: “I’d already been exploited. Loaded [magazine], Neighbours, bikinis … I think by [the time of the Torn video] I was like, I don’t want people to see my silhouette.

“I was sitting in this meeting at [record label] BMG with all these style mags, and I said: ‘Can I just wear my own clothes?’ And no one argued. I think they thought that I had some kind of vision.”

She added: “They weren’t even cool, those trousers. They weren’t even [clothing brand] Maharishi! They were cheap army trousers from [London’s] Portobello Road [market], with Buffalo trainers. Mad, isn’t it?

“It wasn’t intentional. I wasn’t thinking I was starting a trend. But I do think there’s something about ‘I’m gonna be who I am’ that shone through”.

Natalie also insisted she’s much happier now she’s in her fifties and doesn’t mind “getting a wrinkle here and there” because she’s more comfortable in her own skin.

However, she did hint she might be working on a secret beauty project which will be coming to fruition soon, adding: “I’m very low maintenance, but I’ve been working on my own thing for five years. It’s for the woman on the go.”
