The actors were all left devastated after the moviemaker – who directed them in the 1986 coming-of age drama – was found stabbed to death at his home in Brentwood, California in December along with his wife Michele and the couple’s son Nick Reiner has since pleaded not guilty to murder charges.
Wil has now revealed he was able to lean on Jerry and Corey in the aftermath of the tragedy as they embarked on a speaking tour to celebrate Stand By Me’s 40th anniversary. He told PEOPLE: “Jerry and Corey and I felt like we just kind of picked up right where we left off …
“We went from being so excited and so on top of the world to that unbelievable loss, right before all of us were just convinced that we’d be seeing him this year, that we would be getting together to celebrate the movie.
“I’m just so grateful that we had done those shows together right before so that we had a place to land, the three of us, with the only other two people in the world who were really going to be able to understand what the rest of us were experiencing.”
Nick Reiner, 32, was accused of fatally stabbing his parents, with prosecutors alleging the killings followed an argument the night before at a party.
Screenwriter Nick was charged with two counts of first-degree murder with a special circumstance allegation of multiple murders and he pleaded not guilty to both charges.
He has been held without bail in solitary confinement at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility and faces a maximum sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole or the death penalty.
It was recently revealed the murder case won’t be moving forward until September due to delays in the release of the couple’s autopsies, according to the the Los Angeles Times newspaper.
Nick is currently fighting for access to a $1.5 million trust fund established in his name by his parents prior to their deaths and he’s accused his siblings, elder brother Jake Reiner and younger sister Romy Reiner, of backing out of an agreement to fund his legal costs in connection with his trial.
He is due back in court for a preliminary hearing on 15 September.
