The former Arsenal captain has explained why he and his wife decided to leave their long-time Cotswolds home, with the move paving the way for Oasis singer Liam Gallagher to become its new owner.
Tony Adams has revealed the personal reason behind selling his Cotswolds home to Liam Gallagher.
The 59-year-old former Arsenal captain sold the eight-bedroom property near Cirencester, Gloucestershire, to Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher, 53, for £4.25 million after owning the house for 25 years, saying he and his wife, Poppy Teacher, are returning to London so she can pursue a master’s degree in early modern history.
The move comes as Liam continues to enjoy renewed public attention following Oasis’ hugely successful reunion tour, which has dominated music headlines and marked the band’s first performances together in more than a decade.
Tony, regarded as one of Arsenal’s greatest-ever players and also known to television audiences from his appearance on Strictly Come Dancing, said he and Poppy had decided to begin a new chapter in London while she returns to higher education.
The couple are currently renting while looking for a permanent home in north London.
Speaking to the Daily Mail, Tony said: “This is a new era for us. We’ve sold the house and are returning to London. My wife is going back to school.”
Poppy explained the decision to study had initially prompted a practical question from her husband.
She said: “I told Tony I wanted to do early modern history and he said, ‘How do you monetise that?’ And I said, ‘You don’t!’
“But I think he’s proud. He’s telling everyone I’m doing a PhD, but it’s a masters.”
Tony said the couple are specifically searching for a home in north London.
He added: “We’re not going back to the Chelsea area where all the Blues are.”
Tony and Poppy have been married for 22 years.
The former England defender previously spoke openly about rebuilding his life after overcoming alcoholism, with Poppy entering his life following his recovery.
Tony was previously married to Jane Shea, with whom he shares three children, while he and Poppy also have three children together.
Poppy said she now wants to focus on her own ambitions after spending years raising their family.
She added: “I’ve brought up the children, but now I need to use my brain again. Tony and I want to have a London life, do things like go to galleries.”
The property, in the village of Coates near Cirencester, includes five acres of land, a swimming pool, tennis courts, stables and a separate two-bedroom cottage.
Liam completed the purchase in December after relocating to neighbouring Stroud in 2024, where he had been renting a mansion while Oasis prepared for its reunion concerts.
Following reports of the purchase, Liam addressed local residents on X.
He wrote: “To all the BEAUTIFUL people from the cotswolds I come in peace you won’t even know I’m there I’m not like all those divvy celebrities who like to show off I’m LO FI as you were LG x.”
Last week, Liam also reflected on settling into life in the area during an interview with The Sun.
He said: “People round here mind their own business, and I mind mine. I’m not out every night, and I’m not doing anything dodgy.
“My neighbours have been lovely. One of them bakes us cakes, and if I’m in the pub they’ll buy me a drink.”
Liam has remained in the spotlight throughout Oasis’s reunion, with the band’s long-awaited return to the stage becoming one of the biggest live music events of the year.
Alongside brother Noel Gallagher, 59, he has reunited to perform classic hits including Wonderwall, Don’t Look Back in Anger, Live Forever and Champagne Supernova, bringing an end to years of speculation over whether the pair would share a stage again.
