Fans were left stunned after the veteran rock band called off its Los Angeles concert just hours before taking to the stage, with no further explanation beyond “unforeseen personnel matters”.
ZZ Top pulled the plug on their Hollywood Bowl concert hours before they were due to perform because of “insurmountable obstacles”.
The Texas rock trio, led by Billy Gibbons, 76, had been scheduled to perform at the iconic Los Angeles venue alongside Cheap Trick on Wednesday (05.08.26), but shortly before the show was due to begin, the band announced on its official Instagram account that it would no longer go ahead because of “unforeseen personnel matters”.
Ticket holders were told they would receive refunds.
No further explanation was given.
According to the band’s official website, ZZ Top is still scheduled to perform at the Saroyan Theater in Fresno, California, on Friday (07.08.26.)
Billy also addressed fans in a statement, saying: “Insurmountable obstacles require canceling our Hollywood Bowl performance.”
He added: “Friends, fans and followers of ZZ Top are the best in the business and the band is counting on everyone to bear with us for this brief interruption.”
No further details about the cancellation were provided.
Page Six reported it contacted the band’s representative for comment but did not receive an immediate response.
The cancellation also prompted a change of plans for Cheap Trick, which had been due to appear on the Hollywood Bowl bill.
ZZ announced on Instagram that it would instead perform at the much smaller Troubadour in West Hollywood.
The post said: “In place of the now canceled scheduled Aug 5th show, we will be playing a very special, intimate show at The Troubadour in West Hollywood! Come down for a very special evening with us!”
ZZ Top was formed in 1969 by Billy and has become one of the defining acts of American blues rock, known for hits including Sharp Dressed Man, Legs, Gimme All Your Lovin’ and La Grange.
The group’s signature image – Billy’s famously long beard, sunglasses and hot rod-inspired aesthetic – helped make the band one of the most recognisable names in rock music, while its videos became staples of the MTV era.
The current line-up also features drummer Frank Beard and bassist Elwood Francis.
Elwood joined the band following the death of longtime bassist Dusty Hill in 2021.
Dusty died in his sleep aged 72.
Across a career spanning more than five decades, ZZ Top has released 15 studio albums, sold an estimated 50 million records worldwide and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004. The group has continued to tour extensively, remaining a regular fixture on concert stages despite the passing of Dusty and the changing line-up.
Billy has repeatedly made clear retirement is not part of his plans.
Speaking to the New York Post in January, he said he intended to continue touring after 57 years on the road.
He told the publication: “It simply is the greatest job in the world.
“Go to work by playing … and looking ahead to playing it again! Why stop?”
