Rockstar says that gamers don’t have to ‘bother’ with the romantic element of Grand Theft Auto VI

Rockstar North boss Rob Nelson has explained that Grand Theft Auto VI’s central relationship between Jason and Lucia will add emotional depth for interested players, but fans can ignore the romantic elements if they prefer.

Rockstar Games has confirmed that players will not be forced to engage with the romantic side of Grand Theft Auto VI, despite the relationship between protagonists Jason and Lucia playing a major role in the upcoming crime epic’s story.

Speaking to IGN, Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson explained that the pair’s connection is central to the narrative but will not become a mandatory gameplay system.

Players who want to focus purely on action, exploration and criminal chaos will be able to do so without being penalised.

Nelson said: “I have to say it feels great, if you are into it as a concept. Don’t bother with it if you aren’t. Up to you.”

According to Nelson, Jason and Lucia’s circumstances mean they will remain closely connected throughout the campaign, working together as partners in crime.

However, Rockstar wanted to give players freedom over how much they invest in their relationship outside of the main storyline.

Nelson explained: “The narrative is structured in such a way that the circumstances they find themselves in require them to stay together for most of the story and work together.”

The developer said the relationship element represents a new direction for the Grand Theft Auto series, allowing Rockstar to explore emotional storytelling while still respecting players who prefer a more traditional experience.

Nelson said: “Could we bring some sort of emotional resonance to GTA for people if they wanted to engage with it? Could we also provide mechanisms for people to just opt out of it if they’re not into it?”

For players who do want to explore Jason and Lucia’s relationship, the world of Leonida will offer numerous activities beyond crime and missions.

Nelson teased opportunities including visiting a zoo, studying animals, scuba diving, kayaking, parachuting, walking along beaches and simply spending time together.

He said: “When you bring them together, it feels like you’re a steward of their relationship, and you feel protective of them as a unit.”

Nelson added that Rockstar discovered the appeal of Jason and Lucia’s partnership naturally during development, with the duo feeling particularly compelling during both quiet moments and high-pressure situations.

He said: “Whether you’re getting in trouble, or you’re running from the cops, or getting in a car, or waiting for the other one, playing as them together feels very cool.”

Grand Theft Auto VI launches on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on November 19, with Rockstar continuing to reveal new details about its most ambitious game yet.
