Neil Druckmann has confirmed he is no longer creatively involved with the third season of HBO’s The Last of Us adaptation, while teasing that new projects connected to the franchise are in development.
The Last of Us creator Neil Druckmann has distanced himself from the upcoming third and final season of HBO’s television adaptation, confirming that he is focusing on Naughty Dog’s future projects instead.
Druckmann served as a writer and director on the first two seasons of the critically acclaimed series, which adapts Naughty Dog’s award-winning survival horror games.
However, shortly after the conclusion of season two, he announced that he would be stepping away from the show alongside original game writer Halley Gross.
At the time, Druckmann said the decision would allow him to concentrate fully on Naughty Dog’s next projects, including writing and directing the studio’s upcoming science fiction game Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.
Druckmann said: “Before any meaningful work starts on season three, now is the right time for me to transition my complete focus to Naughty Dog and its future projects.”
In a new interview with The Washington Post, Druckmann clarified that he had no role in shaping the creative direction of the third season, despite Naughty Dog remaining the owner and guardian of The Last of Us franchise.
He explained: “I wasn’t involved in shaping this season’s creative direction, and Naughty Dog did not have a creative role in the direction of this season.”
However, Druckmann reassured fans that stepping away from the HBO adaptation does not mean the end of The Last of Us as a franchise.
He teased that multiple projects are currently being developed, although he stopped short of revealing details.
Druckmann said: “It’s important for us to note that as the creator of the games, Naughty Dog is still the steward of this IP and even though this might be the end of this adaptation, we’re not done with The Last of Us.
“There’s a couple projects in the works that, when the time is right, I’m very excited to talk about.”
The announcement comes after a mixed response to the second season of the HBO series.
While the first season was praised for its close adaptation of the original game, some fans criticised changes made during season two.
Viewership reportedly dropped significantly following the latest episodes.
The upcoming third season is expected to conclude the television adaptation and is scheduled to arrive in 2027.
Bella Ramsey, who plays Ellie, has previously responded to criticism of the series by suggesting that viewers unhappy with the direction should simply avoid watching.
Meanwhile, fans continue to speculate about Naughty Dog’s next steps for the franchise, particularly following the cancellation of an online multiplayer project in 2023.
