The Oscar-winning actor has put years of speculation about his revealing appearance in David Fincher’s psychological thriller to rest.
Ben Affleck has finally settled a long-running debate about his notorious nude shower scene in Gone Girl, revealing he did not wear a prosthetic when he stripped off for the psychological thriller.
The Oscar-winning actor, 54, addressed speculation surrounding the scene in a new interview with Variety, confirming his brief full-frontal appearance in David Fincher’s 2014 film was genuine.
The sequence featured Ben alongside Rosamund Pike, 47, whose character Amy Dunne returns home after her mysterious disappearance, while Ben plays her husband Nick.
Ben’s revelation comes as the actor also discusses his continuing professional relationship with his former wife Jennifer Lopez, 57, following their divorce in January 2025.
Asked whether he had worn anything to conceal his body during the Gone Girl filming, Ben said: “I wore no prosthesis.”
He added: “I’ve only worn one in one film, Hollywoodland. It was a nose.”
The shower scene occurs towards the end of Gone Girl, after Amy unexpectedly returns to the marital home covered in blood.
She asks Nick to join her in the shower, insisting he remove all his clothes before stepping inside.
The moment forms part of the psychological struggle between the characters, with Amy checking her husband is not wearing a recording device.
Although the sequence shows Ben’s naked body only briefly, it attracted considerable attention when the film was released, with viewers debating whether the actor had used a prosthetic.
Gone Girl was adapted from the bestselling 2012 novel by Gillian Flynn, 55, who also wrote the screenplay.
The film follows a husband who becomes the principal suspect after his wife disappears on their fifth wedding anniversary.
It examines marriage, deception and media sensationalism as the investigation into Amy’s disappearance develops.
Rosamund received an Academy Award nomination for best actress for her performance, while the film became one of the major commercial successes of Ben’s acting career.
Ben previously won an Oscar for co-writing Good Will Hunting with Matt Damon, 55, before receiving another Academy Award as a producer of Argo, which won best picture.
His other major films include Armageddon, Pearl Harbor, The Town and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, in which he portrayed Bruce Wayne, also known as Batman.
Ben’s reference to Hollywoodland concerned the 2006 biographical drama in which he portrayed George Reeves, the actor best known for playing Superman in the 1950s television series Adventures of Superman.
The film, directed by Allen Coulter, 66, explored the circumstances surrounding George’s death and also starred Adrien Brody, 53, and Diane Lane, 61.
Elsewhere in his interview with Variety, Ben discussed his former wife Jennifer and her career in Hollywood.
The actor was asked why Jennifer, whose film credits include Selena, Out of Sight, Hustlers and Maid in Manhattan, was sometimes overlooked for her work as an actress.
Ben said: “I’m biased. I have an enormous amount of respect and admiration for what she can do.”
The comments follow his involvement as a producer on Kiss of the Spider Woman, the musical drama starring Jennifer and directed by Bill Condon, 70.
The film, adapted from the stage musical and the novel by Manuel Puig, features Jennifer as Ingrid Luna, a screen star who appears in the fantasies of a prisoner.
Diego Luna, 46, and Tonatiuh, 31, also star in the production, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2025.
Ben and Jennifer first became engaged in the early 2000s after meeting on the set of Gigli, the 2003 romantic crime comedy in which they starred together.
Their highly publicised relationship, which attracted the nickname “Bennifer”, ended in 2004 before they rekindled their romance in 2021.
The couple married in Las Vegas in July 2022, nearly two decades after their original engagement.
Jennifer filed for divorce in August 2024, with the separation finalised in January 2025.
Ben was previously married to Jennifer Garner, 54, whom he met while working on films including Pearl Harbor and Daredevil.
The former couple, who married in 2005 and finalised their divorce in 2018, share three children – Violet, 20, Fin, 17, and Samuel, 14.
