The Prince of Wales joined Cate Blanchett, Robert Irwin and Hannah Waddingham for an unexpected television appearance ahead of November’s Earthshot Prize ceremony, discussing environmental ambitions, his Aston Villa allegiance and his admiration for Christopher Nolan’s films.
Prince William has made an unexpected appearance on The Graham Norton Show, surprising the studio audience by joining a star-studded sofa to discuss his environmental ambitions, his passion for Aston Villa and his enthusiasm for Christopher Nolan films.
The Prince of Wales, 44, joined presenter Graham Norton, 63, for a special edition of the BBC One chatshow airing on Friday (23.10.26), ahead of the Earthshot Prize awards ceremony in Mumbai in November.
William appeared alongside Australian actress Cate Blanchett, 57, wildlife conservationist Robert Irwin, 22, and Ted Lasso star Hannah Waddingham, 52, all of whom are involved with the environmental initiative he established in 2020.
The prince’s entrance came after Graham had begun discussing the Earthshot Prize with the other guests, before unexpectedly inviting William to join them on the sofa.
The group discussed the importance of combining optimism with urgency in addressing climate change and environmental damage, with William outlining the objectives of the initiative he founded to support practical solutions to global environmental problems.
The Earthshot Prize was established to “celebrate and scale the solutions that will repair our planet”, according to its mission.
William launched the project after drawing inspiration from former US president John F Kennedy’s Moonshot programme, which challenged scientists and engineers to send astronauts to the Moon and return them safely to Earth.
The initiative awards five annual prizes worth £1 million each to organisations developing solutions to major environmental challenges.
Its five categories are Protect and Restore Nature, Clean Our Air, Revive Our Oceans, Build a Waste-Free World and Fix Our Climate.
William has committed to supporting the project until 2030, with the latest winners due to be announced at the forthcoming ceremony in Mumbai.
The television appearance also gave the prince an opportunity to discuss interests away from his royal and environmental responsibilities.
Among the subjects raised was his longstanding support for Aston Villa, the Birmingham football club he has followed for years.
William also discussed his appreciation of films directed by Christopher Nolan, 56, whose credits include The Dark Knight trilogy, Inception, Interstellar and the Oscar-winning Oppenheimer.
Earlier this month, William brought traffic to a halt on The Mall in London when he joined international cricket stars for a match promoting the forthcoming Earthshot ceremony.
England cricketer Joe Root, 35, and former West Indies captain Brian Lara, 57, were among those taking part, alongside former India captains Ajinkya Rahane, 38, and Sourav Ganguly, 54.
William has also been involved in preparations for the first Children’s Earthshot Awards, which will take place alongside the main ceremony in Mumbai. The initiative has selected 15 finalists aged nine to 17 from across India to present environmental innovations.
The November awards will feature a number of international celebrities, including actor Rami Malek, 45, Indian actresses Alia Bhatt, 33, and Sonam Kapoor, 41, and Bridgerton star Simone Ashley, 31.
Filmmaker Karan Johar, 54, will host the ceremony, while singer Shreya Ghoshal, 42, is among the scheduled performers. The event will be streamed internationally on Prime Video.
Last year’s ceremony took place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where Australian singer Kylie Minogue, 58, and Canadian musician Shawn Mendes, 28, performed.
The event also attracted former Formula One world champion Sebastian Vettel, 39, and British prime minister Keir Starmer, 64.
Among the 2025 winners was Lagos Fashion Week, recognised for encouraging designers to adopt more sustainable practices in an industry associated with significant waste.
The Graham Norton Show airs on BBC One on Friday at 10.40pm.
