Google Play has axed its rewards programme.
The app service – which is available to Android users and acts as a rival to Apple’s App Store – launched the Google Play Security Reward Program in 2017 to to motivate security researchers to track down and responsibly report flaws in popular apps from the store but it will close at the end of August.
In a post, Google said: “Important note: The Google Play Security Reward Program (GPSRP) will close for submissions of new reports on August 31st 2024. All reports submitted before August 31st will be processed. Final reward decisions will be made before September 30th when the program is officially discontinued. Final payments may take a few weeks to process.
The company initially described GPRSP as a “vulnerability reward program ” and that it recognised the time investment of “security researchers” for the good of the business.
Google said: “The Google Play Security Reward Program (GPSRP) is a vulnerability reward program offered by Google Play in collaboration with the developers of certain popular Android apps. It recognizes the contributions of security researchers who invest their time and effort to help make apps on Google Play more secure.”
“The goal of the program is to identify and mitigate vulnerabilities in apps on Google Play, and keep Android users, developers, and the Google Play ecosystem safe.
“If you’re an app developer that would like to learn more about working directly with external security researchers, please apply to join GPSRP.”
