Google’s latest Maps update adds Gemini‑powered search and a redesigned 3D navigation system, letting users ask natural‑language questions about real‑world needs and get personalised, map‑based recommendations instantly.
Google is rolling out a major upgrade to Google Maps, bringing its Gemini‑powered AI directly into the app and reshaping how users search for places and navigate cities.
The update introduces a new conversational tool called Ask Maps and a redesigned driving experience featuring 3D visuals and expanded route guidance.
Ask Maps allows users to type natural‑language questions about real‑world needs and receive tailored suggestions plotted directly on the map.
Instead of scrolling through lists or digging through reviews, users can ask specific, practical queries — such as where to charge a phone nearby without queueing in a café, or where to find a public tennis court with evening lighting — and receive a curated set of options with location details.
The feature draws on Google’s vast location database, which includes information from more than 300 million places worldwide, and incorporates insights from over 500 million community contributors.
It can also factor in a user’s activity within Google Maps, such as past searches, saved places and personal preferences. Someone who regularly looks for vegan restaurants, for example, may see those preferences reflected in suggestions when searching for places to meet friends.
Once a user selects a location, Google Maps will offer quick actions including booking reservations, saving the spot to a list or sharing it with others. Directions are available immediately.
Alongside Ask Maps, Google is introducing its biggest overhaul of driving navigation in more than a decade. The new system, called Immersive Navigation, features updated visuals, more detailed 3D representations and expanded route information designed to make driving guidance clearer and more intuitive.
