Matthew Rhys has got into “heated” rows with strangers over their refusal to use headphones in public.

The Americans actor – who lives in Brooklyn, New York, with partner Keri Russell, their nine-year-old son Sam, and her two kids from a previous relationship – thinks it is important to “school” people in behaving with consideration around other people, but admitted people get “offended” when asked to be quieter.

He told the Wall Street Journal: “What is driving me bananas these days are people who watch things on their phones without headphones. I’m turning into my dad, but I feel like I have to start saying to people, ‘Excuse me, do you have headphones?’

“Because if we’re not schooling people, it’s going to become more rampant than it already is, and it is out of control.”

Asked if he ever gets recognised in such moments, he replied: “No, I haven’t been recognised, but it gets heated. People get offended that you’re suggesting such a thing, which makes me think we’re already too far down the line.

“It’s a real benchmark of who these people are in society. Shut the f*** up.”

The 51-year-old actor tries to immerse himself in nature and switch off from the modern world in order to relax.

Asked how he switches off, he said: “If it’s not on the water—if it’s not a kayak or sail or something like that—then horses are big for me. You just get to be quiet and in nature. You can’t be on your phone. You have to be present.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Matthew admitted he has more of a belief in ghosts following a spooky night at a haunted castle in his native Wales when he was in his 20s.

After being warned about mysterious goings on, the Widow’s Bay actor was suddenly woken at 2am when he felt a touch to his shoulder and discovered the room was “freezing”.

He said: “I was looking out—something on the outside of the bed had tapped me.

“It was like someone was just trying to get our attention.

“I wouldn’t say I was a skeptic [before]. But I believe far more now.”
