Natalie Imbruglia credits Olivia Rodrigo – plus Gracie Abrams and Camila Cabello – with giving Torn fresh life and keeping her career thriving.
Natalie Imbruglia says she has “a lot to thank” Olivia Rodrigo for after the pop superstar pulled her onstage in London to perform Torn, reintroducing the ’90s classic to a new wave of young fans.
The 51-year-old Australian star’s music has been given a new lease of life after several pop stars, also including Gracie Abrams, Camila Cabello and Dua Lipa, performed Torn.
Olivia, 23, took it one step further by inviting Natalie onstage during her London concert in 2022 to perform Torn, which is actually a cover of the American band Ednaswap’s tune.
Taking part in NME’s Does Rock ‘N’ Roll Kill Braincells?! quiz, she said: “I’ve got a lot to thank Olivia for because she got me onstage to sing Torn and a lot of young children might not have even known who I was. I’m grateful for that stamp of approval and she’s an incredible songwriter. And then, last year, Gracie Abrams and Camila Cabello each sang Torn whilst they were in Australia. I’ve DM-d all of them with so much gratitude. Because of them doing that, I can still have a career. Also, I didn’t have many friendly people – that I admired and looked up to – supporting me, so I’m conscious of what it feels like to come into this industry.”
At the time, Natalie hailed Olivia the perfect role model.
She told thefortyfive.com: “It was very flattering to be asked. Olivia’s a good person. It makes me happy that young girls have people like that to look up to. You could see the respect that we both had for each other. We were literally singing to each other and didn’t want to look at the audience because I was giving props to her, and she was giving props to me. It was so lovely.”
