Xbox executive explains outage cause

Xbox CTO Scott Van Vliet has explained that a failure within a shared Microsoft licensing service caused widespread issues with sign-ins, game libraries and launching purchased titles.

Xbox has apologised to players after a major outage affected its services, with the company’s chief technology officer revealing that the disruption was caused by a failure in a Microsoft licensing system.

Scott Van Vliet, Xbox’s CTO, explained that the issue impacted players attempting to access their game libraries, sign into accounts and launch games they already owned.

In a post on X, Van Vliet said the outage – which impacted gamers on Sunday (26.07.26) and Monday (27.07.26) – was caused by “a licensing service that sits outside of Xbox, but which Xbox depends upon”.

Although he did not identify the specific service involved, he clarified that it was “an internal service at Microsoft that is shared across multiple products, not some random system”.

The failure affected entitlement checks, which are used to confirm that players have access rights to games and digital content.

Van Vliet explained: “This caused some sign-in scenarios to fail, and it caused many scenarios that require an entitlement check to also fail, such as listing out your Full Library and launching games that you own.”

He added that the problem also impacted Xbox publishing and store partners that rely on the same infrastructure, which led to some games experiencing issues while others continued working normally.

Van Vliet described the incident as “an unacceptable situation” and said Xbox needed to improve its ability to prevent similar problems in the future.

According to the executive, Xbox’s support teams detected the first signs of the issue through automated monitoring systems and declared a major incident.

Van Vliet said: “Once we isolated the failing infrastructure, we shifted traffic onto the healthy parts of the system while the team continued to work towards a root cause.”

However, recovery was uneven across different regions, meaning some players regained access before others.

Xbox is now conducting a full post-incident review to examine not only what caused the failure, but why one service issue was able to create such widespread disruption.

Van Vliet said the company would focus on strengthening the systems behind account sign-ins and game launches, improving detection methods and ensuring future communication with players is faster and clearer.

He said: “I care less about the one-line root cause and more about the real questions.

“Why a failure in one service was able to take down this much, why recovery took as long as it did, and what we change so a single point of failure can’t ruin your night again.”

The Xbox CTO thanked players for their patience and concluded with a simple message: “We’ll do better.”
