The 54-year-old singer-and actor has denied the allegations contained in the documentary – in which 10 women told how they met the Thirty Seconds to Mars frontman between 2002 and 2016, and detailed his alleged predatory behaviour – but Jessca Sartenaer believes there will be a major impact on his screen career, even if he is able to continue with music.
Noting this isn’t the first time Leto has been accused of sexual misconduct, Jessica told Deadline: “People haven’t been paying attention.
“I feel like it will be very difficult for him to ride this one out. People are [now] really paying attention, and I just don’t see how he could be attached to another Hollywood project. However, I think his music career is maybe separate from that. He’s still got some diehard Thirty Seconds to Mars fans.”
Executive producer Mark Radford thinks the response to the documentary will be a “bellwether” moment for the industry.
He said: “The Jared Leto case is a bellwether on where we are on the MeToo movement.
“There has been a lot of pushback in that area, and how the industry responds to the allegations about Jared Leto will tell us where the industry — both music and film — stands when serious allegations are made against one of their most powerful people.”
While the Masters of the Universe actor gave a statement after the film was released, Jessica revealed he and his team had failed to respond directly to the allegations, despite being given more than two weeks to do so, and didn’t share his eventual denial with the documentary team.
She went on to praise the bravery of the women who shared their stories, including those who were underage during their alleged encounters with the Kings and Queens hitmaker.
She said: “The courage of the women who have come forward for this investigation is just immeasurable, coming up against a very powerful man like Leto.
“I do think what they have done will empower many other women to speak their truth.”
In the documentary, one woman claimed she was sexually assaulted in a motel bathroom when she was 17, while another accused the Dallas Buyers Club actor of threatening her with sexual assault when she was unexpectedly left alone with him in a hotel room at the age of 19.
A third, identified in the programme as Clara, alleged Leto had “shrugged off” a conversation about the age of consent being 18 in California when he had sex with her at the age of 17, and claimed he asked her to call him “daddy” while pretending to be a “little girl” or “my little girl”.
A fourth woman claimed he had groomed her, using his celebrity status to make repeated sexually-explicit phone calls to her when she was just 16, and suggested at least once that they should have sex.
Leto has denied the allegations.
He said in a statement: “I have never sexually assaulted anyone in my entire life. These claims are absolutely and categorically false.”
