Teri Hatcher will be taking over from Vanessa Williams in the West End production of The Devil Wears Prada.
Teri Hatcher is “so excited” to start a new chapter in her life with a role in The Devil Wears Prada musical.
The Desperate Housewives star is relocating to London from Los Angeles as she is taking over the role of iconic fashion magazine editor Miranda Priestly from Vanessa Williams in the West End production next month, and she can’t wait to get started.
She gushed to Britain’s HELLO! magazine: “I’ve experienced and grown so much, and I get to bring all of that into my Devil Wears Prada performance.
“I feel like this is a gift for me, to arrive into a Teri Hatcher that I haven’t got to be yet, and I’m so excited for it…
“You just know when you read the right script. It speaks to you like it’s yours and then it might meander around the universe, might take a little bit of time to make it happen for you, but you know it when you see it. And I feel that way about Miranda. I think this is the right time in my life for me to bring the right qualities of my experience and my talent and my being to this show.”
Although the 61-year-old star hasn’t seen the London production yet, her 28-year-old daughter Emerson has, and played a key role in convincing her to sign on for the show.
Teri said: “She saw Vanessa in it and said it was great, so when the opportunity came my way she was the first person to say: ‘Oh my god, you have to do it, you’re going to have so much fun.’ “
Teri is thankful to have had the support of her former Desperate Housewives co-star Vanessa with her preparations.
She said: “I obviously go way back with Vanessa, so she and I have communicated about it, and she’s been unbelievably supportive.
“Vanessa was supportive in terms of saying to the producers, ‘You’ll love her, she’s great, she works so hard’, and she’s encouraging me to make it my own and have a great time. She’s also going to tell me where to go to get things done while I’m in London.”
Earlier this year, Teri admitted one of her biggest regrets was turning down the chance to perform on Broadway.
The actress had been touring the US in a production of Cabaret in the late 1990s but decided against retaining the role of Sally Bowles when it transferred to the New York stage because she was “exhausted”.
She told People magazine: “I was thinking that I’ve always said my biggest regret, because I don’t believe in regret, but after I originated the tour of Sally Bowles in Cabaret from the Rob Marshall, Sam Mendes production back in like 1999… I did that in four cities over seven months with Norbert Leo Butz.
“It was an amazing experience.
“At the end of that, they asked me to come to Broadway, and I didn’t, because I had a young toddler. I’d already done it for seven months, and I was exhausted. But I look back and I think that was my chance to be on Broadway.”
However, the Tomorrow Never Dies star was still hopeful she’ll get the chance to tread the boards in the iconic theatre district at some point in her career.
She added: “So maybe I’ll get another one. I hope so.”
