Bill Gates wants to discuss the dangers of AI with Donald Trump.
The Microsoft founder has warned that it’ll be incredibly tough to agree a global framework for AI technology, and Gates wants to speak to the US President about the potential threats posed by the cutting-edge technology.
Speaking on NBC’s Meet the Press, Gates explained: “What he said [about AI] is fine, but I think after he hears from me and other people, including that this does not handicap us in whatever he thinks the nation-state race is, that, you know, we will come to a consensus.”
Gates observed that through the 20th century, the US has played a central role in creating broad agreements designed to protect humanity.
He said: “Since World War Two, the US should be very proud that when there have been global challenges, we, in a way that was benign, where we had friends and allies coming along with us, you know, aviation safety, ozone layer, nuclear weapons, a lot of things where we played the fair actor, not aggrandising whatever our unique strengths were. And AI is one we’re going to have to go back to this, ‘Hey, humanity is all in this together’.”
Trump previously described the notion of AI destroying humanity as a “hoax”. But Gates has pushed back against that idea.
The billionaire philanthropist explained: “It’s not a ​hoax at all.
“I hope that, given my life’s work in the field, my saying how unique and different this is and how concerned I am will add to what he’s hearing from other people.”
Trump took to social media earlier this month to address the conversation around AI and the threat that it supposedly poses.
The US President wrote on his Truth Social platform: “AI taking over the World, destroying Humanity, and all other things bad, is a HOAX (sic)”
