Sydney Sweeney and Marilyn Monroe are related and here’s the connection

A new study has found that Hollywood icon Marilyn Monroe is actually a relative of Sydney Sweeney.

Sydney Sweeney is reportedly related to Marilyn Monroe.

The Euphoria actress, 29, has been compared to the Hollywood icon in the past, and back in December 2025 she wore a white dress for The Housemaid premiere which reminded people of Monroe’s white skirt look from The Seven Year Itch.

Now, a new study by MyHeritage has found that the pair are actually ninth cousins, once removed.

It’s said they share a mutual ancestor called Ezra Perry, who was born in 1625 and died in 1689.

Perry was an early English settler in Sandwich, Massachusetts.

Roi Mandel, director of research at MyHeritage, in a statement: “People have always drawn parallels between Sydney Sweeney and Marilyn Monroe, but seeing their paths align on a deeper level inspired us to look for a real bond in the MyHeritage archives.

“Uncovering their shared branch was incredible, it’s a powerful reminder that humanity is one vast family tree, and when we dig deep, we uncover how remarkably interconnected we all are.”

This year, Sweeney prompted further comparisons to Monroe at the Santa Barbara Film Festival as her vintage Ceil Chapman gown evoked the silver screen legend’s April 1952 LIFE magazine cover shoot.

Just last month, it was reported that her boyfriend Scooter Braun is planning to propose, and sees her as a “modern Marilyn Monroe”.

A source told the New York Post column PageSix: “He thinks she is the modern Marilyn Monroe. He is trying very hard to marry her. He is following her and chartering private planes.”

Sweeney yet to portray the How to Marry a Millionaire star – who died aged 36 in 1962 – in a film or TV show, although the likes of Ana de Armas (Blonde) and Michelle Williams (My Week With Marilyn) have done so in the past.

Ellen Burstyn and Dakota Johnson portrayed versions of Monroe in short film Flesh Impact, which was written and directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal and debuted at Venice Film Festival last month, and MyHeritage has revealed that the Verity star also has a connection to her.

Monroe and Johnson are ninth cousins, three times removes.

MyHeritage researchers Naama Kanskin added: “With a new film bringing Marilyn Monroe back into the spotlight, our research team wanted to see whether there was a deeper family connection. Discovering that Dakota Johnson and Marilyn Monroe are related turns the casting into a real-life family story.”
