Former child star Christy Carlson Romano has recalled an “awkward” exchange with Mandy Moore and Heather Matarazzo at a wrap party for The Princess Diaries.
Christy Carlson Romano has accused Mandy Moore of being a “mean girl” at a wrap party for The Princess Diaries.
The 42-year-old former child star has recalled being invited to a “wrap party or something” for the 2001 classic, where she had an awkward exchange with Mandy and her co-star Heather Matarazzo.
Mandy played cheerleader bully Lana Thomas in the movie, while Heather played Mia Thermopolis’ (Anne Hathaway) quirky best friend Lily Moscovitz.
Appearing on Page Six Radio, Christ claimed: “I knew Heather from doing something for MTV in New York City before she was, like, hitting it big with this new feature film.
“So I go up to Heather and I’m like, ‘Hey, do you remember, we worked together…’ And Heather was kind of awkward and she was like, ‘Yeah, no, I don’t remember.’
“Mandy was next to [Heather] and Mandy kind of did this, like [condescending laugh]. I was so hurt by it. I was like, ‘Mandy’s a mean girl!’ I didn’t know what to make of it, but I did crash that party, man.”
Meanwhile, Christy was actually meant to audition for the leading role of Mia in the beloved film but her Even Stevens commitments meant she wasn’t available.
Back in 2021, she said on her YouTube channel: “It is almost time for me to leave to go get ready for the audition, and I get called in by the producers and they say, ‘Christy, we don’t have time for you to go to the audition today’.
“At the time, you couldn’t just put yourself on tape… so if you didn’t show up for the audition, chances are you weren’t gonna get an opportunity. And this was a big one.”
Christy admitted she missed out on a “big chance” by not making the audition, and it was one she wanted to do “so badly”.
She added: “I don’t know why, but I just knew it could be a big deal for me. I didn’t get that audition.
“I didn’t get to go because we had to film overtime or something like that. So, sadly, I never got my shot at that.”
She believes it “would have made [her] career” if she landed the role, with the movie spawning a 2004 sequel – plus a third in the pipeline – and transforming Anne Hathaway into a Hollywood megastar.
Christy said: “[That] isn’t to say that [Hathaway] wasn’t the right person for the role. She’s amazing. She was so cute in it, and so charming.”
