Russell Brand is said to have been “cowering in fear” in prison after being heckled by “hundreds” of prisoners.
The 51-year-old comedian was denied bail ahead of his sentencing after he was found guilty of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault following a trial at London’s Southwark Crown Court on Thursday (05.11.26), and fellow inmates at Wandsworth Prison in London have reportedly created a foul-mouthed chant about his crimes.
A source told the Mail on Sunday newspaper that inmates have repeatedly chanted: “There’s a Brand new n**** on the wing! A Brand new n****. Brand, you ****, you ain’t so f****** lairy now.”
A source added: “Weekends at Wandsworth can be boring as the prison is so understaffed, meaning there is usually very little out-of-cell time for prisoners.
“There is no outside exercise in the yard. Dinner or tea is served to prisoners at 4.30pm and then prisoners are back in their cells until 8am the next morning.
“They have to get their amusement somewhere, so they’ve made Brand the object, with hundreds of prisoners shouting the chant.”
The heckling has left Brand – who will be sentenced on Monday (09.11.26) – “like a shadow”, who rarely leaves his cell.
The source added: “Brand only leaves his cell to collect his food at mealtimes before returning. He is going around like a shadow.
“So far it’s only been verbal abuse but that doesn’t mean that if somehow another prisoner bumps into him it won’t be just verbal as any celebrity is a high-end target.”
Brand has reportedly been moved to the vulnerable persons’ wing, where he will allegedly be forced to wash his belongings in his sink if he wants a change of clothes, drying his socks and underwear on “the only heating”, a pipe which runs through the cells and around the prison.
The insider said: “Conditions are basic. He has a small metal basin and a toilet in the cell.
“The only heating is a pipe that runs the length of the building and through each cell, so prisoners use it to dry their towels, T-shirts and socks etc. There’s no regular collection of laundry and washing is a luxury as and when.”
The Get Him to the Greek actor was reportedly not expecting the verdict, so hadn’t prepared for potentially being put behind bars and “did not even take a bag with him to prison, so he has no belongings.”
Brand was met by the prison’s assistant governor shortly after his arrival and warned to “expect the rough with the smooth”, and has also prayed with the facility’s chaplain.
