Chloë Sevigny says she used to embrace her alternative style as “an armour”.
Chloë Sevigny wants to “refine” her alternative style to help her “feel more like a woman”.
The 51-year-old actress, who will turn 52 in November, has opened up on how her unique fashion sense has evolved over the years.
She told WWD: “I’m trying to find a way to refine my kind of alternativesness and make it still feel like me, but also feel more like a woman.
“I feel like when I was younger, I wanted to project so much of like an edginess, like it was an armour.”
She has taken a lead from her friend Angela Hill, a photographer and the co-founder of London’s Idea books, by buying a few main items each season and rotating them.
Speaking about her own wardrobe, she added: It’s definitely the arrows going around in their little triangle.”
Given the cold weather in New York towards the end of the year, Chloë wants to make sure she has “a lot of hats” and some boots, as well as some items for nights out.
She explained: “I was thinking a lot about nighttime because I always feel like all of my more fancy looks, I’m borrowing or returning.
“They’re all my Cinderella dresses, as I lovingly refer to them as. But then when I look at my closet, I have no eveningwear.”
She has teamed up with Mytheresa on the retailer’s latest campaign, and chief creative officer Julian Paul is delighted to have her on board.
He said: “Her personal style has always felt authentic rather than trend driven, and that instinct reflects what luxury means to us today: refined, considered and deeply personal.
“She was the perfect voice to tell this season’s story, one about dressing as a form of self expression, not just following what’s new.”
Chloe previously pushed back against the idea that she has a particularly good fashion sense.
Asked if she considers her style to be effortlessly cool, Chloe told Elle: “It feels innate.
“I love finding something that makes me feel good. It feels like having some sort of armour on that makes me ready to face the world. I’m pretty wacky; when people say I have such good style, I’m like, ‘Do I?’
“And the red carpet is so different from day to day but I’m always dressing for where I’m going. I love going on holiday and packing a really concise suitcase. I just find a lot of joy in it.”
Chloe admitted to being “all over the map” with her style during her younger years.
Reflecting on previous trends and outfits she’s worn, Chloe explained: “I was kind of all over the map. The low-rise skinny jean is a staple of the era. I loved wearing those with a pump and a fuzzy coat. I was quite young in that era; I was just teetering around. It was quite grungy and carefree, whereas now things seem more polished.”
