Filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer Reiner were found dead at their Los Angeles home in December 2025, and Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hochman has now confirmed that Nick, who has been accused of murdering his parents, won’t face the death penalty.

Hochman told NBC News: “After a careful and thorough review of all these factors, the district attorney’s office will not be seeking the death penalty in this case.

“That means that the maximum sentence that Mr. Reiner will be looking at is life without the possibility of parole.”

Rob and Michele were well-known death penalty abolitionists, and Hochman confirmed that he recently discussed the issue with Jake and Romy Reiner.

He said: “We did speak with Nick Reiner’s siblings, and they made their views very clear. We took their views into consideration in ultimately deciding not to seek the death penalty.”

Nick is accused of the first-degree murders of his parents.

Hochman previously described the tragic incident as a “profound betrayal by someone who was loved and trusted by the very people he is accused of killing”.

He added: “The indictment unsealed today also adds a special circumstance allegation that the defendant committed the murders by means of lying in wait. We hope that by having a grand jury return an indictment in this case, it will bring us one step closer to a trial and achieving justice.”

Following the incident, Barack Obama, the former US President, paid a heartfelt tribute to the filmmaker and his wife.

Obama wrote on X: “Michelle and I are heartbroken by the tragic passing of Rob Reiner and his beloved wife, Michele. Rob’s achievements in film and television gave us some of our most cherished stories on screen. But beneath all of the stories he produced was a deep belief in the goodness of people—and a lifelong commitment to putting that belief into action. Together, he and his wife lived lives defined by purpose. They will be remembered for the values they championed and the countless people they inspired. We send our deepest condolences to all who loved them.”
