Music star Tinashe has opened up about her fashion sense.
Tinashe is “still a big midriff girl”.
The 33-year-old star has recalled growing up in the late-90s and early 2000s, when she wore low-rise jeans and crop tops that exposed her midriff, and Tinashe remains a fan of the distinctive look.
She told People: “I was a midriff girl, right off the bat. I always wanted that belly button out; I just felt like a baddie. I’m still a big midriff girl.”
Tinashe worries about smelling good, too. The singer explained that she wants to “smell like a spa”.
Tinashe said: “I want to smell like a rock star and look like a rock star. My scent vibe is a little essential oil. I like to smell like a spa.”
Despite this, Tinashe is surprisingly open-minded about her own sense of style.
She explained: “There’s kind of no rules when it comes to going out. I really don’t have a formula. I just pick whatever feels fun and right in that moment for that evening.”
Tinashe will release her new album, Popstar, in September – but she previously admitted to harbouring career doubts during her younger years.
She told Face to Face with Becky G: “The next seven years after I signed that record deal, I went through a rollercoaster of success and then periods of stagnation.
“Periods where I wanted to release a project and maybe my label wasn’t on the same page and we had big creative differences.”
Tinashe actually lost confidence in herself at one stage, as she lacked support from people within the music industry.
She said: “I didn’t feel supported in my art and that’s when I really felt that I started to lose that confidence myself as a creative, because I felt that I had to make compromises to work in this business model.”
Tinashe started to compromise bits of herself amid her self-doubts.
The Throw a Fit hitmaker explained: “When you’re working with a company and there’s so many people that you have to please, you start to make these little tiny compromises here and there.
“And before you know it, it’s too much and you’ve lost this sense of really who you are and what you want to do. I felt that in order to get that back, I needed to just do it on my own.”
