Sony is reportedly preparing a return for Killzone, with Guerrilla Games said to be exploring a new project that could revive the dormant first-person shooter series.
PlayStation’s long-dormant Killzone franchise could be making a comeback, with reports suggesting Sony and Guerrilla Games are preparing a new project based on the former flagship shooter series.
According to MP1st, a new Killzone title is currently in the very early stages of development. While an official announcement is not expected soon, sources familiar with the project claim that Guerrilla Games has begun work on bringing the franchise back after more than a decade away.
The report suggests the project is being developed with support from an external studio rather than being created entirely in-house at Guerrilla.
Details remain limited, but the most consistent information points towards a remaster or remake of an existing Killzone game.
The original Killzone, released for PlayStation 2 in 2004, is considered the most likely candidate for an update.
The game helped establish Guerrilla as one of Sony’s key studios and was famously marketed before release as a potential ‘Halo Killer’, although it ultimately developed its own identity within the PlayStation ecosystem.
Another possibility is a full reboot of the franchise, although current reports indicate Sony is more likely to start with a modernised version of an existing entry.
The project is reportedly connected to Guerrilla’s wider development plans, with the studio expected to focus on Killzone after work on Horizon Hunter’s Gathering is completed.
However, plans could change due to the early stage of production.
One possible development partner is People Can Fly, the studio behind Outriders.
PlayStation and People Can Fly previously announced a partnership for a project based on an existing PlayStation intellectual property, leading to speculation that the collaboration could involve Killzone.
The franchise has been dormant since 2013’s Killzone: Shadow Fall, which launched alongside the PlayStation 4.
Although the game received generally positive reviews and maintained an active multiplayer community for years, Guerrilla eventually moved away from the series to focus on the Horizon franchise.
In 2024, Guerrilla art director Roy Postma explained that the studio wanted to move towards the Horizon franchise’s brighter and more colourful world after years of working on Killzone’s darker science-fiction setting.
Postma said: “We were done with it as a team. As a studio, we needed to refresh the palette.”
However, renewed interest in classic PlayStation franchises has created demand for the return of older series, and Killzone remains one of the most requested revivals among fans.
If reports are accurate, Sony could soon bring back one of its most recognisable shooters as PlayStation looks to expand its portfolio beyond its current lineup of blockbuster franchises.
