Nicolas Cagen has learned he needs to “watch [his] words” because he just wanted to let people know his house was too dangerous for trick-or-treaters when he declared himself to be “homeless”.
Nicolas Cage just wanted to let people know his house was too dangerous for trick-or-treaters when he declared himself to be “homeless”.
The Madden actor thinks he needs to “watch [his] words to the letter” after he sparked headlines last week when he said he was “a little bit homeless” after his Malibu home was damaged by a sinkhole in September. He was trying to explain that his Halloween celebrations would be different from how they usually are because he and his family have been staying in hotels.
He told Extra: “Meaning my house was not available to my trick-or-treaters on Halloween night, and Halloween is a very important holiday to me. Not that we are destitute. That was my point. I really have to watch my words to the letter. The scrutiny is immense.
“Should I have said unhoused? I just mean my house was not decorated. It was red-tagged. Please don’t go to that house. You might hurt yourself. That’s my point.”
The 62-year-old actor wasn’t at the property when the damage, which was caused by coastal erosion, occurred, and he stressed that he, his wife Riko Shibata and their four-year-old daughter August are all OK.
He said: “We’re doing fine and I’m content.”
Asked if he was home when the sinkhole happened, he said: “No, thank God. That’s scary stuff. You know, it’s dangerous.”
Nicolas – who also has sons Weston, 35, and Kal-El, 21, from previous relationships – is looking forward to celebrating Thanksgiving with his family.
He said: “I’m grateful for our daughter. I’m grateful for my wife. I’m grateful for Halloween. I’m grateful for the ability to make movies with people I admire and that everyone is healthy.
“We’ll be in Santa Monica again. Our daughter wants to have turkey and we’ll figure that out. She was talking about it just yesterday, so we’ll do something. We’ll find something fun to do.”
The Pig star caused a sensation last week when he declared himself homeless.
After being asked about his plans for Halloween at L.A. Comic Con on 31 October, Nicolas admitted: “I’m currently a little bit homeless.
“Something happened to my house in Malibu, so I’m just sort of living in hotels so I don’t have normal trick-or-treaters I would like to enjoy tonight.”
However, the Spider-Noir star added he would take his daughter out trick-or-treating in Santa Monica, and was going to watch Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 horror classic The Shining after putting her to bed.
Amid adjusting to new living arrangements, Nicolas is still fighting to save his four-level oceanfront property, which he purchased in 2024.
According to the New York Post’s Page Six, the National Treasure star rushed to file three permits with city officials to fight against the damage.
But the sinkhole had expanded from 30 feet by 30 feet to the point where it had wrapped around the side of the house and up to the front door, swallowing a fence, ladders and temporary toilets from the construction site.
The Ghost Rider actor requested an emergency building permit with city officials and was granted permission to pack sandbags against the beach and exterior of his property for wave protection and to prevent further erosion.
Additional permits were approved for asphalt debris removal from the sinkhole in preparation for shoring installation and excavation to collect soil samples.
As well as the damage to Nicolas’ driveway after the land underneath was washed away, both a water and gas line were broken.
