The 61-year-old model/actress has revealed she was given good advice by late designer Valentino, who told her the secret to dressing well is to never look “like you tried too hard” – and she always tries to stick to it.
She told the Telegraph newspaper: “Valentino, who sadly passed away earlier this year, used to always tell me that everything had to look ‘easy’.
“Never looking like you tried too hard. Mix new with old. Mix Zara with Hermes. The object was not to look like a Lady Who Lunched.”
Elizabeth added her other style rules include not spending too much money on expensive designer pieces and jewellery – which she often borrows instead of purchasing – as well as wearing bright colours or white and standing up straight.
She added: “Posture is everything. I infuriate my friends by poking them in the shoulders and telling them to sit up straight.”
Elizabeth went on to reveal she has kept most of clothes from over the years and her closet is bursting at the seams.
She added: “Most people think my closet looks like I’ve been burgled. I’m a perfect candidate for a hoarding show as I loathe throwing anything out. I’ve kept pretty much everything I’ve ever worn, except my Versace safety-pin dress, which is in the Metropolitan Museum [of Art].
“I have way too much and it’s overflowing. I often do a swoop and put things in plastic lidded boxes but frequently burrow through them and out it all comes again. I exhaust myself with my messiness.”
However, Elizabeth often has a good sort out and finds treasured pieces she can wear again.
Elizabeth previously revealed the one item she has the most of is jeans – as she has “hundreds” of pairs stashed in her attic.
Asked if she had to wear one thing for the rest of her life, she told the Sunday Times Style magazine: “Jeans. I wear them every day. I wish I were the sort of girl who wore pretty skirts and dresses, but I have dogs and live in the country, so I’m always covered in mud …
“I have hundreds of pairs in boxes in the attic. I’m gradually working my way through all the old skinnies and low-rise and using them up for gardening.”
The Bedazzled actress also has “masses” of “beautiful” pairs of shoes that she is unable to wear because of problems with her ankle and toe.
She said: “I have torn ligaments in my ankle and hallux rigidus in one of my big toe joints, so I have to be very careful about high heels.
“I shouldn’t really wear any at all but I sneak in a few.
“I have masses of beautiful, neglected shoes that I’ll never wear again but can’t bear to part with.”
