Shailene Woodley turned heads with her bold ensemble at the Emmy Awards, and now her stylist has defended the divisive look.
Shailene Woodley’s stylist appears to have called out “super rude and mean” comments about her Emmys outfit.
The 34-year-old actress stepped out at the Emmy Awards earlier this week in a unique ensemble which sparked a lot of debate, with Megyn Kelly delivering a scathing assessment of the outfit.
Taking to Threads, Shailene’s stylist Karla Welch wrote: “Love or hate something fine. But it’s an opinion and it can even be a conversation.
“But being super rude and mean and taking glee from it, well that says a lot more about the mouths it’s coming from.”
The Big Little Lies star appeared on the red carpet in a low-cut blue periwinkle top and gold pants from Pierpaolo Piccioli’s Balenciaga F/W 26 haute couture collection.
The look was completed with burgundy leather gloves and a stunning Venetian glass HOWL necklace.
Her outfit went viral, while TV star Megyn didn’t hold back with her own opinions.
Speaking on Tuesday’s (15.09.26) episode of The Megyn Kelly Show on SiriusXM, she said: “The top looks slightly like a wrestling singlet.
“It’s extremely low-cut, and it almost doesn’t look intentionally so. It almost looks like she got attacked with some scissors or something.
“Unless you’ve got that super-tight middle with a teeny-tiny waist — and trust me, I’m not one of those people — you really can’t pull off a top like this, ‘cause it gathers right around your belly.
“And that’s generally not where any of us want attention going.”
Megyn even took aim at the low-cut nature, claiming that “only the Halle Berrys of the world” and people like Zendaya can “really do that”.
She added: “Unless you’ve got an absolutely stunning rack, it’s probably not a great idea to show that much of the boobs. That much of the girls.
“A little, I’m fine with a little. I’ve shown a little in pictures. But a little goes a long way, I’d say.”
Not done there, Megyn continued her rant as she described the pants as “ugly”, comparing them to a “tan burlap sack” as she took more digs at her hair and gloves.
She said: “I’m sorry, I like you, Shailene. It’s a thumbs down. I blame your stylist, not you.”
By the time Shailene rocked up at the Walt Disney Company after-party following the Emmys, she kept the pants on but covered up the top with a baggy t-shirt from Laurie Anderson’s 1986 concert film Home of the Brave.
Not everyone was so critical of the look, with some social media users agreeing with Karla’s defence.
One user wrote: “The whole point of fashion is to play and try new things and be adventurous! Most are too scared to!
“Most importantly, she looked so happy and at east, and like she was having so much fun and feeling like the best version of herself.”
